Wrestling with God

They were all my favorite scriptures today: From Numbers; the bronze serpent (upon which is based the caduceus used as a symbol of the medical profession). From Ephesians; ” For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God–not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”

And from John; “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, so that all who believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

It’s been a week of wrestling with God (but THAT story of Jacob was not one of the lectionary readings…..). Though DH’s colonscopy was routine, and the biopsy of his skin lesion turned out to be benign, there was still some anxiety involved in waiting for the results, and I…well….demanded from God that the results be normal….

….and DS’s skin lesion biopsy is still pending.  It of course, is an uglier lesion, and the doc said to expect the need for more surgery, possible skin grafts…..and I have slept poorly, and “wrestled” every night…..

Pastor based the sermon today on “Can you believe it?!!”….those things we are asked to believe in as people of faith, and how, though we believe, we, like the Israelites, demand that God bless us even more .

Of course I believe that the Israelites were healed from the bites of the fiery serpents when they beheld the brass snake set on a pole.

Of course I believe that the leper was healed because Jesus said “I am willing….be cleansed.”

Of course I believe that Jesus died, descended, rose and because I believe, I shall not perish, but have everlasting life….

Though I believe, I still need to wrestle with God and feel my hip being displaced from its socket to let me know he is in charge. But like Jacob demanded a blessing before he let loose of God, I demand….. a further blessing.
