The Fading Rain

There was a song on George Winston’s “December” album named “Minstrels.”  It was a nice song when you listened thru speakers.  It was a hauntinly surreal song when you listened through earphones.  With earphones, you hear the sound start in your right ear….it gets louder as it travels through your head….till it reaches your left ear and then fades away….like minstrels approaching, and then their music fading as they march past you.

I thought of that song as I sat on the lanai today and listened to the rain approach. Our prevailing winds are from the east…..and there is a large pasture next to us with tall cane grass.  When rain approaches, it starts in the east as just the barest rustle of the cane grass fronds.  The noise gets louder as the wind picks up and the rain comes, becomes cacaphonous as the rain pelts from directly overhead….and then fades again to a rustle as the shower and its attendant wind move up the coast to the west of us.
